Surplus wire buying in the Black Belt and East Alabama

Mills, universities, automotive suppliers, military installations and farmland — a long, wide region where freight planning matters as much as the wire.

01 The market

Two economies in one region

The Black Belt counties west of Montgomery are rural and agricultural, with paper mills, catfish and poultry operations, and small industrial parks. Wire surplus there tends to be modest in volume but heavy in type: mill maintenance stock, welding lead, feeder cable and grounding conductor.

East Alabama is different. Tuscaloosa has the university and the automotive assembly and steel operations that grew around it. Lee County has Auburn University and the supplier and distribution base along the I-85 corridor. Russell County has Fort Moore across the river in Columbus. Houston and Coffee counties have agriculture, food processing and the aviation training mission at Fort Novosel.

Each of those produces a different inventory, and each city page below covers it in local terms.

02 Where wire sits

Mills, campuses and depots

  • Paper and pulp mills: tray cable, control cable, medium-voltage feeder and Type W portable cable.
  • Automotive and steel: VFD cable, large feeder, welding lead and grounding grid conductor.
  • Universities: fire alarm, plenum, Cat 6 and control cable from renovation work.
  • Military installations: documented surplus from facility maintenance and construction.
  • Agricultural and food processing: SOOW, control cable and small feeder stock.
  • Contractors: MC, SER and THHN partials from service work and new construction.

Distances are long here — Tuscaloosa to Phenix City is close to three hours — so combining loads across sellers is often the difference between a workable pickup and an uneconomic one.

03 Local detail

Rural sites and long driveways

Outside the main cities, loading conditions vary widely: a mill with a proper dock, a farm shop with a gravel apron, a volunteer fire department with a concrete pad. None of that prevents a purchase, but it changes the equipment required.

If the reel is on a trailer, say so — that can simplify collection. If it is behind a building on soft ground after rain, say that too.

For sellers with multiple rural locations, send each address and the material at each. A route through three counties is planned differently from a single stop.

The wire

Print from the jacket or the reel tag.

Details and photos

Include anything that affects removal: dock height, forklift capacity, appointment rules.

Photos help most when they show the reel flange tag, the print on the jacket, the conductor end and a wide shot of the lot. JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF; keep the four uploads under 10 MB in total. Larger sets can be emailed to saleselectricalbuyers@gmail.com.

Submitting this form does not commit you to anything. We reply with an offer or a question — never a mailing list.

Reel behind a rural shop?

Send the location and a wide photo of the access. We will work out the rest.
