Region 01 · Birmingham metro
Surplus wire buying in the Birmingham metro
Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Chilton counties — the state's densest construction market, and its deepest bench of contractor leftovers.
Old industrial city, new distribution corridors
Birmingham was built on iron and steel, and the industrial footprint that came with it — foundries, fabricators, rail yards and heavy maintenance shops — still generates a steady supply of control cable, tray cable, welding lead and feeder stock. Around that core, the metro has spent two decades adding hospitals, university buildings, warehouses and suburban commercial work.
That combination produces two very different kinds of surplus. Industrial sellers usually have older stock: partial spools of control cable, weathered reels behind a shop, welding lead from a machine that was replaced. Commercial contractors have newer material: leftover THHN boxes, MC partials, SER from a service change and feeder reels from a completed building.
Both are bought. The industrial lots need more photographs, because the print is often worn and the storage has been outdoors.
Connexes, stockrooms and yards
- Contractor connexes around Birmingham, Irondale, Pelham and Trussville, holding partial reels from finished jobs.
- Hospital and university projects where fire alarm, plenum and control cable were ordered in bulk.
- Distribution warehouses along the I-20/59 and I-459 corridors, with overstock boxes of THHN and Cat 6.
- Fabrication and steel-service shops with welding cable, SOOW and grounding conductors.
- Shelby County industrial parks in Pelham, Alabaster and Calera, where new build-outs leave feeder cut-offs.
The metro's road network makes removal straightforward: I-65, I-20, I-59 and I-459 put most industrial addresses within a short drive of a dock. That access is part of why Birmingham lots are usually easy to schedule.
What we see most in Jefferson and Shelby
The most common inquiry from this region is a mixed conex: several partial reels of THHN, a couple of MC reels, one SER reel and a box of green grounding wire. The second most common is a plant stockroom with control cable and tray cable in short lengths.
For mixed lots, a single photo of the rack plus individual tag photos is enough. We do not need every item measured before the first conversation — we need enough to know whether the lot is worth a quote.
Note where the material is: a warehouse on a dock in Bessemer is a different logistics job from a basement electrical room at a hospital on Birmingham's Southside. Both are workable; the plan differs.
