We buy THHN, THWN and XHHW wire
The most common wire in commercial construction, and the most common thing left over at closeout. Boxes, reels, partials and spools.
Four letters that decide where wire can go
THHN, THWN, THWN-2 and XHHW-2 are all 600-volt building wire, but the letters describe different insulation and jacket ratings, and that affects where the cable is permitted. THHN is a thermoplastic insulation with a nylon jacket, rated for dry locations at 90°C. THWN adds a wet-location rating at 75°C. THWN-2 carries the dual rating at 90°C in wet or dry locations.
XHHW uses a thermoset, cross-linked polyethylene insulation, and XHHW-2 adds the 90°C wet rating. It is common in industrial work, in feeders and where a tougher insulation is preferred. XHHW is also frequently specified in aluminum.
For buying purposes, all four are in scope. The distinction matters because a reel printed THHN only is not a substitute for THWN-2 in a wet location, so the print on the jacket should be photographed rather than assumed.
Boxes, reels, spools and cut lengths
THHN leaves a jobsite in every direction. Full 500-foot boxes that were never opened, opened boxes with a few hundred feet left, 2,500-foot reels from a feeder pull, and coils tied off in the back of a van all end up as surplus.
- Boxed stock: #14 through #10 in 500 ft and 1,000 ft boxes, solid or stranded.
- Reels: #8 through 1000 MCM, often with the footage printed on the flange tag.
- Spools: smaller put-ups used by contractors and panel shops.
- Cut lengths: coils with the size written on a tag or the box flap.
Color matters less than size and type, but note it anyway: black, red, blue, brown, orange, yellow, green and white are all quotable, and a matched set of colors for a three-phase pull is more useful than an odd single color.
What we read on the jacket
The printed legend on THHN repeats the type, size, voltage rating, temperature rating and listing marks. A single sharp photo along the cable answers most of the questions a buyer would otherwise ask.
On a box, photograph the end label and the printed flap. On a reel, photograph the flange tag and the loose end where the conductor is visible. If the reel has been re-wrapped with black stretch film, peel back a corner rather than unwinding it.
For partial reels, the remaining footage is the number that changes the quote most. If it is not marked, give us the flange diameter and the number of wraps and we will estimate together.
Send THHN or XHHW details
Include type, size, color if relevant, remaining footage and how the wire is packaged.
THHN and XHHW questions
Do you buy THHN by the box or only by the reel?
Both. Boxed stock is common and easy to quote when the label is intact. Reels are quoted on footage and size.
Does the color of the insulation matter?
It matters for usability rather than for whether we buy. A matched set of colors for a three-phase feeder is more valuable than a single odd color, but all colors are considered.
Do you buy XHHW aluminum?
Yes. XHHW and XHHW-2 in aluminum are common in feeder and service sizes and are quoted as an aluminum lot.
Can you buy wire with the manufacturer's name only and no size print?
Sometimes, if the conductor can be measured and the insulation identified. Send a close photograph of the print and the stripped end.
Leftover boxes from a closeout?
List the sizes and remaining lengths. Boxed stock can often be quoted from labels alone.
