Flexible cable with a hard job

Welding cable is a finely stranded, flexible single-conductor cable built to survive being dragged. It is rated 600 volts and sized from #6 up to 4/0 and beyond, with neoprene or EPDM jackets. It is bought for welders, but also shows up as temporary power lead and grounding lead in shops and on jobsites.

SOOW is portable cord with a thermoset rubber jacket, two to five conductors, rated 600 volts and used for temporary power, pumps, heaters and equipment whips. SJOOW is the lighter 300-volt version. Type W and Type G are heavy-duty single and multi-conductor portable power cables used in mining, marine and industrial temporary distribution.

All of it is quotable when the jacket print identifies the cable and the footage is known.

02 Surplus forms

Half-used spools and cut whips

  • Welding lead spools in #2, 1/0, 2/0 and 3/0, partly used.
  • SOOW cut lengths from temporary power runs at construction sites.
  • Type W reels from plant maintenance and rental fleets.
  • Equipment whips with moulded plugs, often in unopened bags.
  • Coiled lead left behind when a welding machine is replaced.

Welding cable is often stored in a welding shop where it picks up grinding dust and spatter. That is cosmetic. What matters is whether the jacket is cut through to the conductor, whether the copper is corroded, and whether the length is still usable.

What to send

Give us the size, the conductor count for portable cord (2/C, 3/C, 4/C), the voltage rating and the approximate length. Welding cable is usually quoted in whole feet from a spool, so the remaining footage matters.

Photograph the jacket print on both sides of the cable if one is worn, the spool tag if present, and the cut end. If the cable has moulded connectors, photograph those too — factory terminations can change the usability.

Note whether the cord has been used outdoors or in a wet environment. Water ingress into finely stranded copper is difficult to reverse, and it affects the assessment.

Details and photos

Include anything that affects removal: dock height, forklift capacity, appointment rules.

Photos help most when they show the reel flange tag, the print on the jacket, the conductor end and a wide shot of the lot. JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF; keep the four uploads under 10 MB in total. Larger sets can be emailed to saleselectricalbuyers@gmail.com.

Submitting this form does not commit you to anything. We reply with an offer or a question — never a mailing list.

Welding cable questions

Do you buy used welding lead?

Yes, provided the jacket is intact and the conductor is not corroded. Heavy spatter and abrasion are judged from photos.

Do you buy SOOW in short lengths?

Cut lengths of 25 feet and up are considered. Shorter pieces are usually not economical to move.

What is the difference between SOOW and SJOOW?

SOOW is rated 600 V with a heavier jacket; SJOOW is the 300 V junior version with a thinner jacket and smaller sizes. Both are bought, priced differently.

Do you buy Type W and Type G cable?

Yes. Heavy-duty portable power cable is bought in reels and partials, particularly from industrial and utility sellers.

Spool behind the welding machine?

Tell us the size and the approximate footage left. That is the whole quote.
