We buy MC, AC, tray and VFD cable

Armored cable and tray-rated cable are ordered in job quantities and left over in job quantities. Full reels, partials and opened coils are all considered.

01 Constructions

Four families that look similar in a photo

MC, AC, tray cable and VFD cable are all multi-conductor constructions, and from a distance they look alike. The differences are in the armor, the jacket and the listing, and they change both the application and the value.

  • MC (metal-clad): conductors in an interlocked metal armor, often with a green grounding conductor. Used for feeders, branch circuits and equipment connections where conduit is impractical.
  • AC (armored cable): a bonded armor that serves as the equipment grounding conductor, typically smaller sizes for branch circuits and fixture feeds.
  • Tray cable (TC) and PLTC: rated for cable trays and raceways in industrial settings, usually with an overall jacket over two or more conductors.
  • VFD cable: three-phase power cable with a symmetrical ground and shielding for variable-frequency drives, used to keep electrical noise contained.

Each is bought in copper and, less often, aluminum. The armor material matters too: aluminum armor is lighter and common; steel armor appears in heavier industrial constructions.

02 What shows up

Where this cable comes from

MC and AC are branch-circuit products. Contractors buy 250-foot and 1,000-foot reels for a building and finish with part of a reel, which is the most common surplus form. Home-run lengths already cut for a unit that changed are common in multifamily and hotel work.

Tray cable and VFD cable come from industrial projects: a plant adds a drive, orders 500 feet of shielded VFD cable, uses 180 and shelves the rest. Instrument and tray installations often leave several partial reels of different conductor counts.

When a project is cancelled, the reels may still be in original wrap with the manufacturer tag and a packing list attached. That is the easiest possible inventory to quote: photograph the tag, note the reel count.

03 Details

Conductor count and ground

Two reels with the same gauge can be different cables. A 12/2 MC with ground is not the same product as 12/3 MC, and a 3/C tray cable with a shield is not the same as unshielded. The count, the ground and the shielding all need to be visible in the description or the photo.

Record the format as it appears on the tag: for example 12/2, 10/3, 3/C #8, 4/C 2/0. Add whether a separate grounding conductor is included and whether the armor is aluminum or steel.

For VFD cable, note the shield type and the voltage rating (typically 1,000 V or 2,000 V). For tray cable, note the tray rating and the temperature rating, which are printed on the jacket.

Details and photos

Include anything that affects removal: dock height, forklift capacity, appointment rules.

Photos help most when they show the reel flange tag, the print on the jacket, the conductor end and a wide shot of the lot. JPG, PNG, HEIC or PDF; keep the four uploads under 10 MB in total. Larger sets can be emailed to saleselectricalbuyers@gmail.com.

Submitting this form does not commit you to anything. We reply with an offer or a question — never a mailing list.

05 / Questions

MC, AC and tray cable questions

Do you buy cut lengths of MC cable?

Yes, if the length is usable and identified. Short cut lengths under a few feet are usually not worth moving, but 25 feet and up is considered.

What about MC cable with damaged armor?

Minor jacket scuffs are normal. Crushed or heavily kinked armor may make the cable unusable, so send a close photo of the damage and we will quote accordingly.

Do you buy VFD cable?

Yes — shielded VFD cable in 1,000 V and 2,000 V ratings, including partial reels left from drive installations.

Is PLTC in scope?

Yes. PLTC and other tray-rated instrumentation cable are part of the control and instrumentation category and are bought alongside TC.

Reels left from a cancelled package?

Send the tag and the reel count. Original-wrap stock is the simplest thing we quote.
